Lorely Burt has responded to calls from the Civil Service Pensioners' Alliance in Solihull for fair treatment for pension widows.
She is backing calls in parliament for equal treatment for all widows an widowers of Civil Service Pension scheme members.
"Under the current arrangements, widows of retired Civil Servants who joined the scheme many years ago do not get the same benefits as those who join the scheme today. There is a clear disparity for older pensioners creating a two tier system, where the original conditions do not allow a pension for life for scheme members' widows, and provides little or no income for widows of post retirement marriages," said Lorely.
"I am lending my full backing to moves in parliament to extend full rights to older scheme members, and call on Government ministers to ensure that the oldest and most vulnerable scheme members and their spouses are guaranteed the same secure retirement as newer members. It seems incredible that the Government can allow this situation to continue," added Mrs Burt.
