Solihull Member of Parliament Lorely Burt has taken a look inside Bee Hives at Solihull Beekeepers Apiary in Malvern Park

Mrs Burt was given a first hand demonstration of beekeeping following her backing in Parliament for a national campaign by beekeepers against DEFRA plans to axe the Bee Inspection Service, saving £250,000.

"The national inspection service is vital for the maintenance of a healthy bee population" said local Solihull MP Lorely Burt. "I am afraid Government proposals to make savings by cutting the service will prove to be very short sighted, bearing in mind the enormous economic contribution made by bees through their pollination activity.

"It is simply too risky to leave the task of spotting disease early to the nation's 30,000 beekeepers," Lorely added.

Mrs Burt has added her voice to growing cross-party support for preserving the inspection service.
