Do we really need a second runway?
Local Lib Dem MP Lorely Burt has slammed the latest plans announced by Birmingham International Airport to build a second runway over a development line near Catherine-de-Barnes.
"There is no question that these plans are bad for the local environment and our Green Belt" said Lorely Burt, MP for Solihull. "At a time when the growth in airport traffic is towards budget airlines, there should be no need to build across the development line. Other options should be explored".
"We already know that projections in the Government's own White Paper mis-calculated passenger projections and the airport states that a second runway is not needed until 2016", added Lorely. "So what an earth is going on?"
"By 2020, aviation pollution on current trends will negate efforts by other industries and methods of transport to reduce carbon emissions", Lorely explains. "The Government needs to think again and take a fresh look at issue".
Opinion Poll Launched:
The Solihull MP today launched an opinion poll on her website www.lorelyburt.org.uk on the proposals for a second runway. Members of the public can click on a range of options to give their views.
"If its consultation they want, its consultation they will get" exclaimed Lorely.
"I was concerned to see that there were no hints of any significant improvements to the infrastructure, particularly the A45 and junction 6 of the M42", Lorely added. "I was also concerned to read a claim by the airport that the noise impact will be less than expected, when there will clearly be a massive increase in noise pollution".
