Lorely Burt MP speaks out in Parliament for improved services to combat deaths through Ovarian Cancer

November 11, 2005 6:00 AM

Solihull's MP Lorely Burt has spoken in Parliament calling for a debate on the high level of avoidable deaths from Ovarian Cancer.

Mrs Burt quizzed the Leader of the House, Rt Hon Geoff Hoon MP, saying:

"Of the 7000 women who are diagnosed each year with Ovarian Cancer, typically 5000 will die. This is totally unacceptable and we must find a way to improve diagnostic procedures.

Early detection would mean that 95% of women diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer would survive.

The LibDem MP referred to her own Ovarian Cancer petition, signed by around 500 constituents, that she will present to 10 Downing Street next week with the families of women from Solihull who have died from Ovarian Cancer.

"The Leader of the House agreed that I was right to raise the problem and that loss of life through Ovarian Cancer was a tragedy and that Government must find ways to address," added Lorely.

If you are a resident of the Solihull constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
