A Christmas message from Lorely Burt MP

December 22, 2005 5:31 PM
By Lorely Burt Member of Parliament in Solihulll Observer, 22nd December

Hello, happy Christmas and a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year.

This Christmas for me will be a time to stop and draw breath after my busiest year ever. If another person asks me 'are you ready for Christmas' I won't be responsible for my actions!

I'm lucky though because in our family everyone brings something for the Christmas table so no one person has the entire burden or responsibility for Christmas Day.

We can all get over stressed at Christmas: the build up can generate high expectations which may be impossible to fulfil. We also spend far too much money at this time: more, I believe, than any other European country.

So this Christmas why not just relax a bit more and spend a bit less? If you're lucky enough to have family spend more emotional energy on them and more thought on small gifts that would truly delight them. They don't say 'it's the thought that counts' for nothing!

The real message for Christmas seems to have been lost in the clamour for materialistic things. Surely the best present we, our families, our neighbourhood and our world could have is peace.

So maybe this Christmas we could all start in a small way with a bit of tolerance for noisy excited children, fussy aunts and harassed partners. Appreciating the best in our loved ones and taking the time to enjoy being together brings the true happiness we all wish for at Christmas.

If you are a resident of the Solihull constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
