Member of Parliament probes binge drinking in Solihull.

Girl drinking from an alcopop bottle.Following a massive rise in binge drinking under the Labour Government, local MP Lorely Burt has written to the authorities, to clarify what the situation is locally.

"Binge drinking has risen by 28% in England since Labour came to power in 1997" said Lorely Burt, MP [Member of Parliament] for Solihull. "I am therefore writing to Heartlands Hospital, to clarify to what the situation is locally, and to the Council, who have responsibility for combating binge drinking."

Figures obtained by the Liberal Democrats show that there were 51,108 drink related hospital admissions in England, up from 39,913 in 1996/7 - a rise of 28%.

For underage drinkers the figures rose by 15% and for adults it was up by 30%.

"The Government and the local council need to do more in this area," added Mrs Burt.
