Lorely Burt Backs Midwives' Cause

February 15, 2006 12:31 PM

The Royal College of Midwives (RCM) is applauding Lorely Burt MP for supporting a House of Commons motion calling for more financial assistance for student midwives.

Louise Silverton, Deputy General Secretary of the RMC, said: "We're extremely pleased that Lorely, together with more than 140 other MPs from across the political spectrum. Is supporting student midwives."

Lorely Burt said:

"One in five student midwives abandon their studies. Many cite financial hardship as the main reason for dropping out, which is a terrible waste.

"We need 10,000 more midwives for the Government to live up to its manifesto commitment that by 2009 all women will be supported by the same midwife throughout their pregnancy, and that all women should have choice over where and how they give birth.

"To achieve this student midwives must be given the greatest possible chance of completing their studies, and that is why I am backing the RCN campaign for a £10,000 bursary for every student midwife.

"This investment in our maternity services would in turn deliver a better deal for mothers, babies and their families."

If you are a resident of the Solihull constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
