Lorely Burt, Liberal Democrat MP for Solihull, has attacked the new Heart of Shirley proposals published this week.
Commenting ahead of the expected full publication of the proposals next week, Ms Burt said,
"These plans have some serious flaws. Shirley needs ideas that will help local businesses flourish, not gridlock our streets with traffic.
"The plans will only make the traffic problems on the Stratford Road worse. They do not even seem to effectively incorporate public transport.
"A supermarket that's a total of 80,000 sq ft will draw shoppers away from the high street, not to it.
"Shirley's parkland, especially the ancient ring of oaks, is precious. We have to think very carefully before eating into it, and I'm convinced that this scheme has not been sufficiently thought through.
"Shirley wants to keep a vibrant high street with a variety of local businesses. Shirley does not need another supermarket with a total of 80,000 sq ft. It does not need more traffic. It does not need to lose nearly three acres of parkland and open space."
