Lorely Burt, Liberal Democrat MP for Solihull and Women and Equalities Spokesperson, today welcomed the launch by Cancerbackup of the first nationally available series of audio tapes for an estimated one million people with a print disability affected by cancer at some point in their lives.
Twenty five titles from Cancerbackup's range of cancer information booklets and fact sheets will be available on audio tape free of charge to patients, their families and friends by the end of April 2006. Over the next two years 44 titles will be produced, more than doubling the number of audio cancer resources currently available.
Signing EDM 1903, "New Vision for Cancer Document", Lorely Burt MP said,
"This series of audio cancer resources will greatly increase the equality of access to information about cancer for people with a print disability.
"It is widely recognised that access to information about cancer is beneficial to patients and their families, and there is no reason why that information should only be available to a part of the population.
"I fully support this initiative from Cancerbackup, and encourage all of my colleagues to do so as well."

Notes to Editors
Lorely Burt MP also signed Early Day Motion 1903, "A New Vision for Cancer Document". The EDM reads:
That this House supports the launch of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Cancer's New Vision for Cancer which can be seen at www.appg-cancer.org.uk; notes that improvements in cancer care have been realised thanks to recent increases in funding and to the dedicated work of NHS staff; nevertheless regrets that postcode prescribing remains a concern and that the UK lags behind other European countries when it comes to access to new cancer treatments; believes that a new, comprehensive, cross-departmental cancer strategy is urgently needed to bridge the gap between health and social care, and which will set enforceable national standards and entitlements to cover the entire patient journey; further believes that a New Vision for Cancer should educate professionals and the public, improve prevention diagnosis and treatment, and facilitate research into genetics, and the causes of, and treatments for cancer; and urges the Government to advance health policy to ensure this Vision becomes a reality.
The audio materials will be free for individuals affected by cancer on request via the Cancerbackup helpline or website. (0808 800 1234 www.cancerbackup.org.uk)
