Lorely Burt MP backs Bill giving power to local citizens to stop community decline

June 14, 2006 12:00 AM

Solihull's MP, Lorely Burt was today congratulated by the Local Works Campaign for joining with 300 other MPs supporting the Sustainable Communities Bill in the House of Commons.

The Sustainable Communities Bill will turn politics upside down and give power to local communities. The Bill seeks to reverse the decline of community centres - the continuous closure of thousands of post offices, bank branches, independent shops, local pubs and newsagents.

Lorely Burt MP said:

"I am concerned by the steady decline of basic facilities such as shops, banks and post offices in many of our community centres. The Sustainable Communities Bill will give power to my constituents in their efforts to protect and enhance their local services and I will do all I can to help this vitally important Bill become law."

Campaign Organiser Ron Bailey said:

"The decline of local communities - ghost town Britain - is going on everywhere. People are having to watch vital local services and facilities disappear whilst having no power to stop it. The Sustainable Communities Bill will change that by giving communities real power over policies to reverse the decline. We therefore congratulate Lorely Burt MP for signing up to support this crucial Bill."

If you are a resident of the Solihull constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
