LORELY BURT MP CALLS FOR REMOVAL OF HOUSES OF PARLIAMENT LOGO AS HP SAUCE JOBS LOST TO HOLLAND

August 29, 2006 12:00 AM

Solihull's MP. Lorely Burt has written to the Managing Director of American owner Heinz to demand the removal of the Houses of Parliament logo from HP sauce bottles following Heinz decision to move production to Holland.

Mrs Burt backed the campaign to keep 120 production jobs in Aston, Birmingham where the landmark factory provides the gateway to the industrial heart of the region.

"HP sauce has traded on the British-ness of the name and logo for over a hundred years. If Heinz are not willing to respect that tradition and are prepared to sacrifice 120 local jobs to improve the bottom line, then I don't see why they should continue to profit from trading on the name and image of the British Houses of Parliament.

"I have written to the Managing Director calling for the removal of all references to the Houses of Parliament when production moves to Holland and would offer my support to any legal challenge over the use of the name.

"I don't think HP would continue to be the number one brand of brown sauce with a bunch of tulips on the label!" added Lorely Burt.
