LORELY BURT MP SAYS SURVEY SHOULD ENCOURAGE MORE YOUNG PEOPLE TO VOLUNTEER HELP WITH THE SAMARITANS

Solihull's MP, Lorely Burt has responded to a new report by Samaritans with a plea for more young people in the borough to volunteer their spare time.
The survey, launched as part of the Samaritan's annual 24:7 campaign, has found that as many as 42% of people living in the borough have between three and five hours spare time every day.
Fifty-eight per cent have thought about giving up some free time to help others locally, but nearly as many said that they spend their spare time sleeping! Young also came out top at watching TV (79.2%) sleeping or resting (53.5%) and listening to music (53%).
Lorely Burt MP said:
"Most people across all ages say we just 'flake out' for hours in front of the TV, although 63.6% of say they have thought of helping local people - but only seven per cent manage to get out there and do it! This shows there is a huge gulf between thinking about and actually doing something for others.
"It is so important for people to use their spare time for the good of others. Volunteering can be such a rewarding experience not only for those being helped but for those doing the work too. So many volunteers I meet say how it enriches their lives."
