LORELY BURT WELCOMES RESTORED 'RING AND RIDE' SERVICE

May 25, 2007 12:00 AM

Lorely Burt MP has today welcomed the news that a local charity will be able to restart cross-boundary 'Ring and Ride' services for disabled people in Solihull.

The service, run by West Midlands Special Needs Transport, allows disabled people to book transport for visits outside the boundaries of Solihull. After being suspended in November due to cuts to the charity's grant, Lorely campaigned for an agreement which would see the service continue. Now there is enough money in the charity's financial savings to ensure that, from the 3 June, the service will start running again across Dudley, Sandwell and Solihull.

Lorely Burt MP said:

"The popular cross-boundary scheme is part of the Ring and Ride service that offers a lifeline to so many, with just under 2,000,000 journeys provided across the West Midlands Metropolitan area last year.

"It's wonderful to hear that this important service has been saved. After all, it was appalling that funding was ever cut from a service that has been running so successfully for three years.

"I am disappointed, however, that West Midlands Special Needs Transport have had to find the money for this service themselves. I had hoped that CENTRO would have supported WMSNT in restoring a full service. Nevertheless, I will now do my utmost to encourage additional funding for the service, so that it can operate across Coventry, Wolverhampton and Walsall again, providing the full cross-border service that is valued by many Solihull residents."
