Solihull's MP, Lorely Burt is supporting moves by Lib Dem Leader, Nick Clegg in the House of Commons this week to force a referendum on Europe, in or out.
Mrs Burt will join her parliamentary colleagues arguing for a referendum on Britain's membership of the European Union during the debate on the Lisbon Treaty, saying it will give the British people a clear choice on Europe for the first time in over 30 years.
Lorely Burt MP said:
"No one in Britain under the age of 51yrs has ever had a say on our membership of Europe, and neither have half our MPs.
"We want that real referendum because if Britain is to stride forward confidently into the 21st century and tackle global issues like climate change, terrorism and drug trafficking we need to decide once and for all whether our future lies within the European Union, or outside it.
"The Conservatives are proposing a restrictive referendum on the Lisbon Treaty that would not give British people a say on our fundamental relationship with Europe. And what would happen if they succeeded in rejecting the treaty in a referendum?
"They'd still be stuck with the same EU we've got today. Will they campaign against that too? If so, why don't they have the honesty to campaign for their real motive and have a debate about whether or not we stay in the European Union?"
Mrs Burt urged constituents to support her party's call for a referendum on the EU, in or out by signing the petition on her website at www.lorelyburt.org.uk
