Lorely Burt MP is backing a campaign launched by Age Concern in Solihull to improve the quality of life of older people with depression.
Age Concern published their own report illustrating the obstacles to treatment experienced by many older people with depression and wrote to the Solihull MP for support.
Lorely said:
"Depression amongst older people can be caused by a variety of reasons including isolation and loneliness. Too often the symptoms are just passed off as 'one of those things' or 'what you can expect at your age'.
"However, depression is not an inevitable part of ageing and it is essential that the illness is clearly diagnosed and that sufferers get the treatment they need.
"I fully support Age Concern's three-point plan to encourage older people to seek help, to be correctly diagnosed and to get appropriate treatment regardless of age. This is a sure fire way of improving the lives of many older people suffering with depression."
