BURT SLAMS POST OFFICE CONSULTATION RESULT

Solihull's MP, Lorely Burt said she was "gutted" and has slammed the consultation process on post office closures as a "cynical exercise" after the battle to save all three post offices in Solihull constituency was lost.
Following the announcement that Catherine de Barnes, Haslucks Green and Olton Hollow post offices would close, Mrs Burt revealed that only one post office out of 51 across Coventry, Solihull and Birmingham had been saved.

"Despite very strong campaigns to save our post offices, they will now close. Sub-postmasters and customers at all three branches will be devastated by this news.
"Many of the positive arguments that were used in support of each during the consultation were acknowledged, but then dismissed, with other reasons being cited for closure. It has become painfully obvious that the Post Office has been forced by government into a cynical exercise where the numbers of protesters or the quality of argument counts for little.
"The Post Office said Catherine de Barnes had a high degree of car ownership and that car parking at alternative post offices was adequate. I thought we were trying to encourage people to drive less, not invite them to drive further! The next nearest post office is Hampton in Arden where there is a tiny shop and no parking. Parking in Elmdon Heath is also difficult. Catherine de Barnes had the advantage of a combi-counter that meant post office services were available at all times when the shop was open.
"Haslucks Green post office serves a large community, but it was decided that there were good bus services to the next nearest branches. Extra pressure on Solihull's main post office will simply increase waiting times even further at busy periods.
"It was decided that Olton Hollow post office was on a main road and good bus route. However, the loss of the post office will severely reduce business in the shop and result in less footfall for all the shops and businesses there. Small parades like Olton Hollow need all the trade they can get to remain viable.
"I've no doubt Post Office officials are just doing what they are told. However, it leaves a bitter taste in the mouth for thousands of local people who did their best to save their local post office, only to have their efforts dismissed.
"No wonder people have become increasingly cynical about this Labour government. What is the point of asking people for their views if you've already determined the outcome?
"Gordon Brown said he recognised people's concerns and pledged to listen. Well he hasn't shown much evidence of it here in Solihull."
