Solihull's MP, Lorely Burt has welcomed plans announced by Leader, Nick Clegg to suspend regional housing targets and replace them with locally determined housing needs assessments.
Mrs Burt has already requested a full debate in parliament on housing figures following the government's announcement that they want to build up to 20,600 extra homes in the borough.
"Government has ridden roughshod over locally elected representatives by commissioning a report from Nathaniel Lichfield and Partners trebling the agreed figures.
"Local people are understandably very angry about this. Regional housing targets are widely felt to be an inadequate mechanism for delivering the appropriate numbers, mix and location for housing needs in Solihull.
"The Liberal Democrats are proposing the suspension of the current targets and their replacement with sub-regional targets. Local councils should be empowered to set their own targets based on local needs assessments and consultation with local communities.
"We should have a bottom up approach to housing development with councils talking to their local communities and taking the lead on housing development.
