Solihull's MP, Lorely Burt has condemned the response of the Government Office for the West Midlands (GOWM) to the Regional Spatial Strategy Preferred Options Consultation, saying it is clear they have followed the advice of the Nathaniel Lichfield study and want to treble the housing allocation for the borough agreed by local councillors.
Mrs Burt said:
"The Government Office response does not challenge the Nathaniel Lichfield study figures in any way, and simply assumes that precious greenbelt in the Meriden Gap will have to be sacrificed in order to fulfil the numbers.
"The Government Office agrees that greenbelt land should only be designated for development in the "exceptional circumstances" set out in the Regional Spatial Strategy, but then go on to say that "meeting housing needs" should be an important consideration.
"This is a crude attempt to use the Nathaniel Lichfield numbers themselves to allow greenbelt development, and cannot be justified.
"GOWM have failed to recognise the arguments put forward by our elected representatives and will need to be robustly challenged during the Examination process next year.
