Solihull's MP Lorely Burt today expressed her deep concern at a 47.3% rise in unemployment in her constituency since the start of the downturn in November 2007.
New government figures recently published show that unemployment rose right across the borough. The figures show that there were 1075 people claiming Job Seekers' Allowance in Lorely's Solihull constituency last November, an increase of 47.3% on the same period in 2007. In Meriden, unemployment rose by 43.2% to 2,335.
The figures also show that unemployment has now increased overall since Labour came to power. There is a higher percentage increase in Solihull than in Meriden over the past year as the credit crunch takes its toll.
Across the borough there were 3,410 people claiming job seekers' allowance, an increase of 44.43% since November 2007.
Commenting, Lorely said:
"These figures are deeply worrying and underline the need to support Jaguar and Land Rover if they are not to get much, much worse.
"I am very concerned about the effects the current downturn is having on people across Solihull borough and the region as a whole. Jobs are being lost in almost every sector, from low-paid unskilled work, to hi-tech jobs.
"I will continue to promote small business enterprise in Westminster and to work closely with government and other agencies locally to find out what help can be provided at this difficult time."
