Solihull's MP, Lorely Burt has learned today that Shirley Advance have put on hold controversial plans for the new 'Heart of Shirley' development until at least mid 2010.
Plans will also be scaled down and need to come before Solihull Council's Planning Committee again before they can be approved.
Commenting, Mrs Burt said:
"I understand there will be fewer shops, but the proposed Asda superstore will remain the same size. The plans, which have been pushed through against the wishes of Shirley residents and Liberal Democrat councillors have come to nothing and must now be re-submitted.
"This means that Asda will be even more dominant in relation to the existing retail businesses in Shirley.
"If the plans are as described we will fight them every step of the way," she said.
"Shirley urgently needs regeneration that will help bring trade to local shopkeepers rather than help push them out of business. The tough economic climate is effecting local traders as well as Shirley Advance, and many of those won't have the luxury of waiting a year to see if trade improves.
"Solihull Council have mismanaged the whole process from start to finish and left Shirley in limbo with no action now and the prospect of worse to come."
