MP RAISES AWARENESS OF NEW PRESCRIPTION CHARGE EXEMPTION FOR CANCER PATIENTS

April 6, 2009 4:48 PM

Solihull's MP, Lorely Burt has joined with Macmillan Cancer Support to help raise awareness that from 1st April all people in England who are undergoing treatment for cancer or its effects no longer have to pay for their prescriptions.

Lorely said:

"This change in the exemption rules could potentially help around 150,000 cancer patients under 60 - far too many of whom are facing financial hardship as a consequence of getting the life-threatening disease.

"Research by Macmillan Cancer Support showed that nearly half of cancer patients are being forced to cut back on basic needs, such as food or heating, in order to pay for their prescriptions.

"In order to take full advantage of this new exemption, it is crucial that cancer patients know they are now entitled to get their prescriptions for free, and are signposted to apply for a prescription charge exemption certificate.

"Macmillan are doing all they can to raise awareness and I will be writing to Solihull Care Trust to ensure that they are playing their part locally as well."

If you are a resident of the Solihull constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
