MP CALLS FOR OPEN DEBATE ON THE FUTURE FOR HEART OF SHIRLEY

April 28, 2009 3:59 PM

Solihull's MP, Lorely Burt has written to Council Leader, Ken Meeson calling for "more openness" in Council discussions about the future development of Shirley.

The controversial Heart of Shirley project has been a victim of the recession and will undergo several changes that may require revisions to the original planning permission.

Press and public were barred from a meeting of Solihull's Cabinet last Thursday when a report on the scheme was discussed, due to the inclusion of some items of commercial confidentiality.

"I understand that the vast majority of the report was not of a confidential nature and feel that a real opportunity has been missed by the council to begin to build trust again with Shirley residents.

"Surely now would have been the ideal time for the council to get these issues into the public domain and begin to involve local people in deciding what is best for the future of Shirley."

"Keeping the whole report under wraps simply increases suspicion that deals are being done behind closed doors and will further alienate Shirley residents and retailers," said Mrs Burt.

"I have asked Councillor Meeson to have the courage to open up discussion now, instead of presenting local people some way down the line with a 'fait accompli' forced through by Conservative votes from councillors representing other parts of the borough."

If you are a resident of the Solihull constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
