Solihull's MP, Lorely Burt will join 400 former Equitable Life policyholders in a protest outside Parliament tomorrow (Wednesday) to highlight the Government's failure to uphold the recommendations of the Parliamentary Ombudsman following a nine year battle for compensation after the financial collapse of the company.
Mrs Burt has been in regular correspondence with former policy holders in Solihull who are members of the Equitable Members Action Group. She questioned the Chief Secretary to the Treasury on behalf of constituents in the House of Commons last week, during a Liberal Democrat debate led by Vince Cable, and will now protest with them outside Parliament.
EMAG member, Colin Downes said:
"We are extremely concerned that although we have the backing of the Ombudsman and the High Court, the Government continue to deny us compensation and refer to making ex-gratia payments speedily!
"This is a euphemism for putting aside a tiny amount of money as a sop. This is charity and not what the Ombudsman intended. We have 21 days to put pressure on the Government before they return to the High Court, and we are delighted that Lorely will be joining us."
Lorely Burt said:
"At a time when the Government sees fit to commit billions of tax payers' money to bail out the banks and high risk investors, I am determined to continue fighting for acceptance of the Parliamentary Ombudsman's findings and her recommendations for compensation.
"Over 30,000 people have already died waiting for a just resolution to this saga, but Government seem hell bent on delaying a settlement until after the General Election."
