Figures released by the Office of National Statistics (ONS) last week show how the recession is affecting the number of young people in Solihull out of work and seeking employment.
Worryingly, nearly one in five young people between the ages of 18-24 are now claiming Job Seekers Allowance. A rise of 15,000 has left 943,000 young people
unemployed.
Now Solihull's MP, Lorely Burt is calling on the Government to do more to help tackle youth unemployment.
Commenting on these figures Lorely said:
"Young people here in Solihull have been hit hard by this recession, just like they have been across the country. What they really need now is encouragement, support and practical help to improve their skills and enhance their work readiness.
"The Government need to do more to keep young people within reach of the job market by helping them to improve their skills and gain work experience. Liberal Democrat proposals would provide financial aid to young people carrying out work experience and internships, enabling up to 800,000 young people from all backgrounds to take up these opportunities.'
