Baroness Scott of Needham Market, President of the Liberal Democrats, spent the afternoon with parliamentary candidate Lorely Burt on Shirley High Street, to see for herself how the election campaign is going in Solihull.
Baroness Scott was taken around Shirley High Street to look at the issues faced by local Shirley residents in regards to shopping provisions.
Lorely Burt and the local Liberal Democrat councillors have long criticised the Conservative run Solihull Council for the lack of vision they have had for the Shirley High Street as well as their plans to build on precious parkland and destroy the ancient Oak circle.
Baroness Scott said:
"Lorely Burt and the local Liberal Democrat councillors have the vision to ensure that Shirley will once again return Shirley High Street to its glory days."
"The Liberal Democrats still remain the only party which have seriously outlined plans to ensure that our local high streets, like here in Shirley, once again become vibrant hubs of commerce and community activity."
Lorely Burt added:
"For years Solihull council has ignored the residents of Shirley and have focused all of their regeneration efforts on Solihull town centre."
"Meanwhile, when the council does finally publish plans they ignore the desire of local residents and decide it is best to build big box stores on parkland, destroying ancient and loved trees."
"Only the Liberal Democrats, with their plans for vibrant local high streets, can deliver the change that the people of Shirley want."
