Lorely Burt - made visually aware

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Wed 1st Jun 2005

Visually impaired people in Solihull can now expect a first class service from Lorely Burt MP after she attended an afternoon of visual awareness training for MPs arranged by national disability charities Action for Blind People and Royal National Institute of the Blind (RNIB).

The event, held at the House of Commons, helped to inform MPs and their staff about how to meet the needs of blind and partially sighted constituents.

MPs were given the opportunity to get some idea of what it's like to experience sight loss through wearing 'sim specs', glasses that simulate how different sight conditions affect vision. They also learned about the correct way to guide a visually impaired person as well as how to produce information accessible to people with sight loss in formats such as large print, audio tape and Braille.

The Lib Dem MP said "Action and RNIB estimate that there are 3,000 blind or partially sighted people in Solihull constituency. I want to make sure that all my constituents get the service from me as their MP that they need, and I hope that now, this will apply equally to my visually impaired constituents."

Colin Brown, Senior Visual Awareness Trainer from Action for Blind People, who is himself visually impaired said "It is encouraging to see that Lorely has shown an interest about issues that relate to visually impaired people. Many will visit their MP for help and advice on a range of issues, and we hope the training we have offered will ensure she is confident on how to meet their needs."
