A broad coalition of organisations have today welcomed Solihull MP Lorely Burt's support in Parliament for a stamp duty rebate for householders installing energy efficiency measures in their home.

Mrs Burt is one of over 200 MPs who have signed a motion in the House of Commons calling for the Government to introduce such a measure.

A lower rate of stamp duty for house-buyers who install energy saving measures is recommended by many experts including the Association for the Conservation of Energy, the Energy Savings Trust, the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution and the House of Commons' Environmental Audit Committee. It is seen as being an important way of achieving the installation of more energy efficiency products, particularly cavity wall and solid wall insulation.

Lorely Burt MP said:

"The need for urgent action to cut our carbon emissions is greater than ever. The Government has rightly acknowledged that we need to do a lot more to improve the energy efficiency of our homes if we are to meet our climate change target of a 20% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions by 2010.

"I fully support a Stamp Duty Rebate for householders improving the energy efficiency of their home. The sooner the Government introduces such a measure, the better."

Andrew Warren, Chairman of the Sustainable Energy Partnership said:

"Mrs Burt is to be congratulated for signing this important Commons motion. A Stamp Duty Rebate of this kind would be good for house-buyers and good for the environment."
