Solihull Constituents and local Member of Parliament deliver Ovarian Cancer Petition to 10 Downing Street2.06.34pm UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 15th Nov 2005
Solihull Constituents who have been directly affected by Ovarian Cancer visited 10 Downing Street today with their local Member of Parliament, Lorely Burt. They delivered a petition of over 500 signatories to demand more investment in research for screening to combat avoidable deaths through Ovarian Cancer. "Of the 7000 women who are diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer each year, 5000 will die", explained Lorely Burt, MP for Solihull. "We must find a way to improve diagnostic procedures", she added. Early detection would mean that 95% of women diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer would survive. The Lib Dem MP has spoken in Parliament to call for a debate on the high level of avoidable deaths. "The Leader of the Commons acknowledged that loss of life through Ovarian Cancer was a tragedy and that Government must find ways to address the problem," Mrs Burt stated.
