"This ban could dramatically reduce the numbers of people smoking by helping to change attitudes. The ban will also be beneficial to those exposed to second hand smoke. A recent study found that approximately 11,000 deaths each year in the UK could be attributed to second hand smoke. Given the free vote a total ban seemed the only sensible and predictable outcome."
The new laws will come into effect mid-way through 2007. Pub and club owners not abiding by the new rules will receive fines of up to £2500. Smokers ignoring the ban will face spot fines of £50.
