MP ADDS SUPPORT TO CAMPAIGN AGAINST TEMPORARY CAR PARK

12.00.00pm UTC (GMT +0000) Mon 3rd Apr 2006

Lorely Burt MP is supporting a petition from residents of Halifax Road and surrounding areas against a proposed 'temporary' car park on Shirley Park to the rear of their homes.

The car park would be built on tennis courts and a bowling green - two of the few recreational facilities left in Shirley. The tennis courts are still well used but the bowling green has been neglected and is now used for football.

The car park is proposed to replace existing parking where Asda and the new shopping centre would be built.

The prospect of the noise and disruption during building work, followed by traffic pollution and congestion from vehicles together with the potential for anti-social behaviour appals local residents who will present a petition of over 500 signatures to the Council.

Commenting on the plans, Lorely Burt MP, said, "It is clear that these plans are going to destroy a much used local resource. Depriving the area of sports facilities is not a good answer to the problems thrown up by the 'Heart of Shirley' plans."
