Lorely Burt MP backs parents' fight against Little Blossoms Nursery closure

12.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Thu 15th Jun 2006

Solihull MP, Lorely Burt is backing parents' fight to save Little Blossoms Nursery from closure. The nursery, based at Solihull College, currently caters for around 60 children from staff, student and private customers. It is due to be closed following a decision taken by Solihull College Principal, Brenda Sheils.

Concerned Parents have called a meeting at the College on Monday night (19th June) to discuss their next move following the rejection of their latest rescue plan by the College.

Lorely Burt MP, who has worked with parents to try to save the nursery, said:

"I am very disappointed that Solihull College have rejected plans to save the nursery. Parents were prepared to increase fees to close any funding gap supported by the college and introduce other measures to make its operation fully viable financially.

"Students and staff with young children clearly value the nursery. I understand around 25 enquiries for nursery places next year have already been received from students alone, and I can understand that being faced with transporting children elsewhere for nursery provision may well inhibit some parents from taking courses at all.

Pinder Chahal, from the parents' campaign group recently said:

"In view of the nursery closure decision a number of students have made the difficult decision to withdraw from College courses, others are considering their position.

The parent group have fought hard to avoid the closure; proposing a business plan that would easily address the colleges stated concerns, it ensures the majority of nursery places will be occupied by children of college students and staff and also the removable of the current small deficit.

Today the College principal dismissed the rescue plan. Her response has not given adequate consideration to proposals and is still founded on inaccurate assumptions.

Outraged parents believe the loss of such a valuable and well established facility goes against stated government and local authority targets for childcare provision in the Borough

The parent group have vowed to continue the fight to save the nursery, and expect further correspondence with both Governors and the Principal."
