The 'Reading Mission' scheme run by the Reading Agency has proved to be a roaring success, operating in all the borough's libraries.
Over 600 youngsters have already enrolled at Shirley Library alone. Schoolchildren between four and eleven years receive a welcome pack and card to record their reading activities over the summer. Those who read six books in six weeks are awarded a certificate at the library and will also receive a medal when they return to school in the autumn term.
"This is a fantastic scheme that encourages youngsters to read during the long summer holidays when they are away from school. Reading for pleasure is so rewarding for children and will open many more doors during adult life. I was pleased to be able to present books to support the scheme and add to the stock of stories available at Shirley Library."
