BURT DEMANDS COMMONS BAN ON HP SAUCE3.50.16pm UTC (GMT +0000) Thu 12th Oct 2006
Solihull MP, Lorely Burt is calling on Parliament to ban the use of HP sauce until the House of Commons picture is taken off the label or the jobs of the sacked Aston workers are saved. Mrs Burt has tabled a parliamentary motion to invite other Parliamentarians to support the ban on HP sauce. "It is a disgrace that Heinz are moving production to Holland and yet are continuing to exploit this symbol of Britishness to get people to buy the product" said Mrs Burt. "I have written to the Chief Executive of Heinz asking him to remove the image but he has refused. So I think we should refuse to stock HP sauce unless the jobs are restored in Britain or they take the Commons picture of the label" she added. The move follows the recent public reaction to the proposed ' Baked Bean Amnesty' promotional event by Heinz which was scheduled to take place in Solihull this weekend. "Heinz have no clue about the strength of feeling regarding the closure of the historic Aston site. They have moved production to save money so it's time they are hit where it hurts: in the pocket" she added.
