MP PROMOTES BLUE PETER 'SHOE BIZ' APPEAL12.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Wed 10th Jan 2007 Solihull MP, Lorely Burt is encouraging individuals and schools in the borough to support the Blue Peter 'Shoe Biz' appeal, running throughout 2007. The appeal aims to collect 1 million pairs of children's shoes to help raise money for UNICEF's work in Malawi with children facing the consequences of HIV and AIDS. Shoes can be taken to the Clarks Shoes retail outlets in High Street and Poplar Way in Solihull, and Mothercare World at Shirley Retail Park. BBC Radio WM at the Mailbox in Birmingham is also acting as a collection point. Lorely Burt MP said: "The shoes collected are being reconditioned and shipped overseas where they are sold in countries where people find it easier to afford second-hand shoes, and will also raise around £160,000 to help children in Malawi. Many of these children are orphans, living on their own and often responsible for the welfare of younger brothers and sisters. "Taking part is the key. You can even establish a collection point at your school or in your neighbourhood by registering at www.shoebizappeal.org.uk It's also great for recycling."
