LIBERAL DEMOCRATS WIN GOVERNMENT CONCESSION ON CARERS' PENSIONS9.49.17am UTC (GMT +0000) Thu 25th Jan 2007 Liberal Democrat Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary, David Laws MP and Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Women and Equality, Lorely Burt MP, have secured concessions from the Government for better pensions for voluntary carers in a debate in the House of Commons this week. Commenting, Mrs Burt said: "These concessions are a real victory for the 40,000 carers, who up to now have been ignored by the Government. "Those who care for loved ones play a vital role in our society, yet they often get a third-rate state pension, leaving them struggling on a very low income in their retirement. "The new rules would have left out 40,000 carers from receiving a decent state pension, but this amendment means they should now be covered. "Carers are hugely disadvantaged under the present system. The Government must take the opportunity presented by the Pensions Bill to recognise the enormous contribution of carers and ensure they are not left in poverty in retirement."
