SOLIHULL MP CALLS FOR MORE HELP FOR FORMER MG ROVER WORKERS

12.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Mon 12th Feb 2007

Solihull's MP, Lorely Burt has tabled a parliamentary question to the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry following recent reports that one in four of ex MG Rover workers are on minimum wage or unemployed since the Longbridge plant closed two years ago.

Mrs Burt has asked Alistair Darling what assessment he has made of the support packages offered through Advantage West Midlands and Business Development Service, and what further plans his department has to assist the remaining unemployed former MG Rover employees.

Lorely Burt MP said:

"The Longbridge closure may be yesterday's news, but the reality for far too many of the former workers is still one of low pay or unemployment. I am seeking assurances from the Minister that the plight of these workers has not been forgotten, and that further steps will be taken to help them into work."
