BURT TO TABLE MOTION TO PARLIAMENT IN BATTLE TO SAVE POST OFFICES

9.42.54am BST (GMT +0100) Tue 15th Jul 2008

Solihull's MP, Lorely Burt will today table an Early Day Motion in Parliament, seeking MPs support in the battle to save local post offices.

Mrs Burt said she the consultation appeared to be a cynical process by the Post Office with so few objections being upheld. She said that out of 160 objections in the Midlands so far, only four had resulted in a reversal of the decision.

"I am concerned that this may be a cynical exercise with some post offices that are economically viable being lined up for closure, whereas others that may not be sustainable in the long term will go to the wall at a later date.

"I am seeking the support of MPs in calling on the government to ensure that residents in Solihull have a real say in the future of their community post offices. Sub postmasters in Solihull assure me that they have a good business which local people are supporting. It would be a travesty to take that facility away when everyone locally benefits from it and wants to keep it," said Mrs Burt.
