Lorely Burt MP joined Solihull shoppers in backing Solihull Friends of the Earth's campaign for an UK energy revolution on Saturday 25 October.

The environmental group is calling on Gordon Brown to stop trying to wriggle out of his promise to generate 15 per cent of our energy from green energy sources by 2020 and get on with the job of building a thriving British renewable energy industry.

The UK currently generates just 2 per cent of our energy from renewable energy sources such as the sun, wind, waves and tides - but the potential to do more is huge. The Government calculates that off shore wind alone could supply current electricity demand ten times over.

The MP for Solihull, Lorely Burt, said: "At a time when the planet's fossil fuels are running out, and those we have left are literally costing the Earth, renewable energy is the only safe, sustainable way to meet our energy needs for the future."

Tim Atkinson, Solihull Friends of the Earth group spokesperson, said: "We are delighted that Lorely Burt has joined the energy revolution. Rising energy bills and the threat of climate change means generating green energy from renewable sources such as the wind, sun, waves and tides has never made more sense for our wallets and for the planet.

"Investing in renewable energy will bring enormous benefits to the UK. It will help us avoid dangerous climate change, provide a clean and secure energy supply and create hundreds of thousands of jobs and billions of pounds worth of business."
